SALI BOOK NOOK

I'm just finishing "Off Season" by Anne Rivers Siddons.  It is filled with great characters, scenery description and story line that are all fabulously constructed.  Excellent literature but not for anyone who has recently had breast cancer or lost a child.
Ann W. King

Also "Islands" is a good book by this author as well as many other books she has written.  She is one of my favorites.   Send your book selection choices for the newsletter to: Miss Sali  pvindy@aol.com

===========================================================

WHY WE SAY IT!

For many centuries, Europeans have shown great interest in an odd member of the woodpecker family.  Naturalists term it " jynx torquilla; " farmers and hunters clip the Latin title to "jynx".

Few birds have so strident a note as its que, que, que....Reaching England a few days ahead of the cuckoo, the winged travelers fill the air with their harsh noise.   Then the concert ceases as suddenly as it began.  For the remainder of their stay on the island, the birds behave as though mute.   Almost alone among feathered folk, the jynx is fond of eating ants.  And it lays its eggs upon bare wood - not even padding the nest with chips.

Medieval scholars considered it to have special links with the occult forces.  So "jynx" feathers were widely used in making "philtres, allurement, baits and enticements" for the lovelorn.  Jumping the Atlantic, the name of the wizard's bird became linked with voodoo and other forms of black magic - hence, any symbol of bad luck is knows as a "jynx'.

SO NOW YOU KNOW!
