HAPPY SUMMERTIME!
It has been a wonderful summer. Hot but a lot of fun. I hope you all have had the same experience. When the snow flies, we will all be wishing for a few days like this.

SALI Members Luncheon
was a big success. We all had a great time and the food was excellent. Our demonstration by Gretchen was great and we all learned a lot. Thanks Gretchen for your talents and sharing.
The next SALI Members Luncheon will be held on Saturday, October 9th at 11:00 a.m. so be sure to get that date on your calendar. This time in the interest of time, let's try a brown bag lunch. Each person bring your own lunch and we will have more time for the demonstration and won't have the clean up. Also, we will want to allow time to draw names for door prizes and to exchange paintings for those that would like to participate. Apologies to those that did not participate last time because we ran out of time.
Our own Kathleen Rice will do a demonstration on perspective. You do not want to miss this one.

Note from Gretchen
I asked Gretchen about her classes and here is her response!
The students usually work in oil or acrylic. The focus isn't as much about the mediums used as much as what makes a good painting work. I usually don't recommend wc because it can be difficult to change the direction of the piece. The students work on what projects interest them. I think the students should explore what they are interested in . If all the students work on the same project, I find that they start stressing about producing the best in the class and inhibitions and roadblocks start forming. As an instructor, my job is to encourage each student to find what works for them as an individual.

NEW FEATURE!
Since I like to read, I thought maybe some of you might like to know about books that some of the other artists are readying and have enjoyed. I asked Donna Stater to give me a list and here is her reply.
Thanks Donna!!
You had wanted to know the names of some authors. Historical
novels: Philippa Gregory, Alison Weir. Novels involving art and
artists: Susan Vreeland (The Forest Lover is particularly
interesting. You have probably read The Girl with the Pearl
Earring.) Amusing Victorian mysteries set in Egypt: Elizabeth
Peters (She writes more contemporary ones that are also humorous. If
you like LONG novels in a long series that involves history, romance,
medicine, time travel, and a little mystery try Diana Gabaldon (The
Outlander is the first book). Ariana Franklin writes mysteries set
in Henry II's England; the series is "A Mistress of the Art of
Death". These should keep you busy for some time.

If everyone likes this idea, then please send me your list and I will put it in the newsletters as I receive them. Send your list to: pvindy@aol.com

WHY WE SAY IT!!
DEBONAIR
Rich sportsmen of the medieval France lavished a great deal of time and money on their killer hawks. Males were difficult to train, so were seldom used in hunting. Fine specimens were kept for breeding purposes, however and numerous distinct strains were developed. Some had a single tooth on the edge of the upper beak; others had two. Long winged birds were in great demand and came to be known as "Noble " falcons.
Experts were especially proud of hawks that had a haughty manner. Her owner usually gave such a bird the best available food and tended her so carefully that she was always sleek and presentable. In speaking of her, he would describe her as "de bonne aire" (of good air). There was so much talk about "de bonne aire" falcons that any cultured and well-groomed person came to be termed debonair. By the seventeenth century, cosmopolitans of the bird world were becoming obsolete, so their name became applied exclusively to humans.
SO NOW YOU KNOW!
