WHY WE SAY IT!!
APPLE PIE ORDER
As a common expression for tidiness, "apple-pie order" is thought to have arisen because of the baking habits of New England housewives. In great-grandmother's day it was not enough that this favorite delicacy be wholesome and appetizing; it must be made with meticulous care.
Carefully cutting her apples into thin slices, she would have been horrified at the idea of dumping the pieces carelessly into the crust. Instead she methodically arranged them in rows, one following another around the edge of the pie. Having added spice and sugar, she put on the top crust. Then she pinched it around the edges, taking great pains that indentation be evenly spaced.
No wonder that when great-grandfather, had any of his (affairs) arranged precisely as they should be, he proudly referred to them as being in "apple-pie" order.
