Pat, Tom is at the St. Vincent on 86th Street in Indianapolis. His email is slack_tom@yahoo.com. (My computer’s underlining has obscured the _ between slack and tom.) I saw him yesterday and he is improving but he is still can’t be reached by phone. Cards sent to the hospital would get to him.
This information is about a week old. If anyone has any additional information about Tom, please let me know and I will put it in the newsletter. I know we all wish him well and are praying for his quick recovery.

WHY WE SAY IT!
PRETZEL
Most experts agree that the practice of bribing children has its dangers. But it has the virtue of age, if no other. As early as the sixteenth century many urchins showed reluctance to learn their prayers. Since punishment proved futile, some inspired German Monk promised his scholars a reward for excellence.
Tradition has it that the good man took thin strips of dough and twisted them into a knot - suggestive of the folded arms of a person at prayer. After cooking the little cakes, he gave them to the children. Spurred on by this device, his scholars learned so much more rapidly that other monks followed his example.
The novel tidbits came to be called pretzels, from a medieval Latin term, perhaps pretiola ( a little reward). They became so popular in England about the middle of the nineteenth century and quickly crossed the Atlantic.
